Engaged in Loving the World

We want to be a part of the flourishing available for the people, places, and things around us. As Resurrection People, we want to be actively involved in the Holy Spirit’s work of breathing new life into God’s world.

Mustard Seed Grants

What is a Mustard Seed Grant?

Inspired by the parable in which Jesus compares the Kingdom to a mustard seed—the tiny seeds that flourish into plants large enough to provide shade and a place for birds to roost—Mustard Seed Grants are designed to kick start or sustain community projects that embody the Gathering’s vision.

By nurturing congregants’ ideas for community service and engagement, we believe the flourishing will share joy, love, blessing, and renewal with those not connected to The Gathering.

Made possible through congregational giving, these grants are intended to stimulate thoughtful and enthusiastic service that will result in our increased capacity to engage the world around us.

What are some examples of previous grants?

  • Purchasing books and postage to supply individuals in local carceral institutions with reading and educational materials
  • Supporting a women’s empowerment project in the Congo by providing funds for sewing machines and training
  • Commissioning an album using local musicians to build community bridges and contribute music that reflects the character and Kingdom of God

What are the considerations for funding?

  1. Projects selected will articulate creative alignment with Gathering Church vision statements.  Funding preference will be given to initiatives that:
    allow for broad congregational involvement,
  2. innovatively invest in and engage the church’s community (the more local, the better—but don’t let that dissuade your international ideas), and/or
  3. display the potential to grow, evolve, and be fruitful beyond the initial kick- start.

We will accept grant applications on an ongoing basis and funding decisions will be made by a team 2-3 times annually.

Who can apply?

Any group, family, or individual affiliated with the Gathering Church, including children under eighteen with the co-application of an adult eighteen or older.

Grants may be awarded to existing nonprofit organizations, if a person or group from the congregation has a sustained relationship with the organization and the funds are directed to a specific project or intention (i.e. not a general donation).

Anyone interested in participating on the team or with an inquiry into the grant process, please email Elizabeth Swett.

He continued, “What’s a good image for God’s kingdom? What parable can I use to explain it?  Consider a mustard seed. When scattered on the ground, it’s the smallest of all the seeds on the earth; but when it’s planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all vegetable plants. It produces such large branches that the birds in the sky are able to nest in its shade.” –Mark 4:30-32 CEB
