fasting

The Gathering Church participates in community-wide fasts on a regular basis.  The purpose of these fasts is to re-center and re-focus ourselves; to intentionally interrupt our busy lives.  By laying aside a meal, several meals, coffee, cell phone, internet, etc. for a day we may better understand in thankfulness our dependence on God to provide for us.  We fill these spaces instead with humble, not attention-drawing prayer to God.

It is important to us that we marry this discipline of denial with a more intentional understanding of feasting.  It has come to be a special time for us to break this fast by celebrating with others in our community.  This sometimes means organized, geographic prayer potlucks in homes.  Other times it may mean connecting with somebody for dinner or coffee to share what the Lord has taught you in that experience.

This practice is meant to realign us and draw our attention away from ourselves and our distractions, back to the Object of our attention and worship.  Whether reflecting on what we've done or where we've been, bearing down and discerning for a difficult decision to make or direction to go, or preparing for a coming season- this time of fasting and prayer in solidarity is vital.

Don't feel intimidated.  There are no experts in this, and the best way to do it is to do it!  Join us in this special time to hit "reset," to reorder ourselves and grow closer to the Lord and to one another.
